The Puppies of Kan Chan
We don't believe in letting our puppies go before they are at least ten weeks old and sometimes not until they are 12 weeks old or older.  We want to provide a happy and healthy pup, who knows he should pee on the paper or outside.  They will be crate trained, although we honestly hope their new owners will never crate them again but make them part of their family.

After pups are whelped, they live in a container on my carpeted floor that is large enough for the moms' to can get in and out of without disturbing the pups.  For the first 24 hours the moms do not depart the container. Some do not leave for the first 36 hours.  After 48 hours they get out to go outside and take care of their business, get something to eat, drink and then get back in.  The only time the moms get out of the containers is to go pee.  All food and water is brought to the container for the moms for the first two weeks to three weeks.

In three weeks the pups have opened their eyes and are starting to crawl.  When the eyes have opened, I start putting towels on 1/2 of the container and pee pads on the other half.  Now the puppies start sleeping on the towels and peeing on the pee pads.  By five weeks they are trying to climb out of the container as they see their mom getting in and out.  It is at five weeks  they are moved to a 3' x 3' play pen where they will stay until they are nearly 8 weeks old.  Moms still have access to the pups.  It is the moms and the pups who decide when the pups are to be weaned.  I let my pups stay with their moms as long as they like.  This gives the moms time to teach each pup discipline.  My moms play with their pups.  The dads also join in the play in a gentle way.

At eight weeks the pups knowing to use the pee pads, I will move them into the kitchen with all the other dogs.

When pups first go onto the watered down canned food, they may have stomach problems.  This is when they start having their butts washed and cleaned and become aware of water.  By 4 or 5 weeks they have had their first  bath.  At 7 weeks they have had a complete bath.  By the time they leave they are use to being combed and groomed daily and a bath every week to week and a half.

All pups leave with a welcome-home pack that includes:  A Bill of Sale; shots and worming record; a small bag of food, the same as they have been eating at the kennel; a toy; and some pee pads.  If you are buying a show pup, you will have the AKC registration papers.  If you are buying a pet pup, your  AKC registration AKC papers will be mailed to you after your pup has been neutered/spayed.  The most important benefit you receive is a two year health guarantee against any congenital defect.

An additional benefit for buying a puppy from Kan Chan Shih Tzus is that your puppy may board for free, when you go on vacations/emergencies/business trips and cannot take the dog with you.  After the first couple of trips, the fee is $10 a day per puppy/dog.  The pup/dog will be treated like one of my dogs.  They will sleep, eat, exercise with my dogs and receive all the same treats as my dogs.   I always enjoy having my pups come back if only to see how they are doing in life.

The pups will receive their first distemper/parainfluenza/parvovirus/adenovirus 2 at 8, 12 and 16 weeks. At eight weeks they will get their bordetella also.  Sometime around their Sixth month, they should get their rabies shot. The first rabies shot will be good for only one year in the state of Virginia.  The second shot is good for three years.  All rabies shots must be given by a licensed veteranarian to be legal.

We are starting a new regiment for worming our pups that will take several weeks to complete but will make sure that no pup leaves with any kind of worm including whip worms.
